Where is Liberty Village, Toronto?

Liberty Village is a neighbourhood located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The neighbourhood is bordered to the south by the Gardiner Expressway, to the north by King Street West, to the east by Strachan Avenue and to the west by Dufferin Street.

Is Liberty Village a good area to live?

I’m often asked by real estate buyers and renters looking for condos and townhomes in downtown Toronto if Liberty Village is a good neighbourhood to live in. The easy answer has always been YES and here’s why.

There is a diverse mix of multicultural, working professionals, singles and couples, mostly in their late 20’s to early 40’s who call Liberty Village home. More lately, there have been a lot of families with one or two children living in the community as well. The general vibe in Liberty Village has always been fun and friendly.

Liberty Village also has a multitude of restaurants, bars and pubs, coffee shops, banks, grocery stores, gyms, convenience stores and pet food and supply shops. The neighbourhood is fairly self-contained and enables most residents to get everything they need within a very short walking distance to each spot.

Liberty Village is also very pet friendly with a ton of small dog owners in particular. There are a number of parks and parkettes to take your pooch for a stroll throughout the neighbourhood. It’s also a great way to meet your neighbours.

Why is it called Liberty Village?

Liberty Village was once home to the Toronto Central Prison from 1873 to 1915 and the Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women. The prison was utilized as an industrial facility and staffed primarily by prisoners. The prisoners worked there as cheap labour while being given the opportunity to rehabilitate themselves for eventual release back into society.

Once a prisoner had successfully served their prison sentence, the freed prisoner would take their first steps into the community, getting their first taste of “Liberty.” Thus, the name Liberty Village was born.

How much are condos to buy or rent in Liberty Village?

There are a number of newer high-rise, mid-rise and townhomes in the Liberty Village community. The average condo unit bought or rented is a one bedroom plus den. The average price for a condo purchase these days is $699k to $799k for 600-700 square feet and those same units rent for an average of $2,300 per month and up.
